How to Care for a New Tattoo in the First 14 Days
The final stroke of the needle is not the end of a tattoo. It is the start of the healing period, and the 14 days that follow shape how your art settles. Once the covering is off, gentle cleansing and consistent hydration give your skin the best conditions to heal.
Recovery is often treated as a waiting game. In reality, the 14 days after an appointment are an active window. Your body is responding to the ink, the surface is renewing and your skin needs steady, gentle care. That is what SKINGRAPHICA® LOCK is designed for.
In the first 3 days, your skin’s priority is to close the surface. Beneath it, your body is also responding to the ink. Macrophages, your body’s clean-up cells, take up pigment particles, and some are carried away through the lymphatic system. This is a normal part of how every tattoo settles.
LOCK is designed to care for your skin through this stage. It uses Squalane, a lightweight lipid similar to the skin’s natural sebum, to help keep the skin hydrated and comfortable without feeling heavy. Thick petroleum-based products can feel occlusive on fresh skin. Squalane leaves a light, breathable finish instead.
Many aftercare products rely on Dexpanthenol (vitamin B5) alone. We take a broader approach, because skin that is knitting back together benefits from more complete care.
LOCK includes Centella Asiatica (often called Cica), a botanical long valued in skincare for soothing and comforting stressed skin. We pair it with Madecassoside, one of its key compounds, to help calm the look of redness and keep the skin comfortable while it heals. Comfortable skin is easier to leave alone, and that matters for fine-line work and soft shading.
Around day 5, most collectors notice the itch. It is a normal part of healing and often appears as the surface renews and the nerve endings in the area recover. The common mistake is to scratch, which can tear the fragile surface and pull at flaking skin before it is ready to come away.
Rather than masking the sensation with harsh ingredients, LOCK uses Bisabolol and Allantoin, 2 ingredients known for soothing and conditioning skin. They help comfort the area so it is easier to leave alone. If the itch comes with spreading redness, heat, swelling or discharge, see a doctor or pharmacist.
How your tattoo looks over time is also shaped by your skin’s internal chemistry. Glycation, a process where excess sugar molecules bond to proteins, can make the collagen in your skin stiffer and less elastic over the years. Skin that loses elasticity can make a tattoo look less crisp as time passes.
Good aftercare starts with keeping skin supple. Antioxidants and hydrating ingredients help keep the skin moisturised and comfortable while it heals. Supple, well-cared-for skin gives your tattoo a strong foundation to settle into and to look its best for years.
Put the science to work. LOCK is designed for the 14 days of healing once the covering is off, to comfort your skin and help keep it hydrated.
