ICONICA · Science
For decades, the tattoo industry relied heavily on repackaged generic skincare and nappy rash creams. Discover how a new era of clinical precision is revolutionising the science of tattoo preservation.
ICONICA
Moving Beyond Generic Repackaged Skincare
Tattoo aftercare has moved on from “good enough”. For decades, you walked out of the studio with a fresh masterpiece, and the advice for preserving it was as basic as the art was complex. Grab a tube of whatever the local chemist had on the shelf and keep it greasy. Today, aftercare can be made for tattooed skin, stage by stage.
For a long time, the prevailing wisdom among enthusiasts and even some artists was that the specific product didn’t matter much, and to be fair, at the time there was little choice. Very few products were designed around the specific needs of tattooed skin. SKINGRAPHICA® was created to change that.
We were all just borrowing from other categories. But as tattoo artistry has evolved into a sophisticated, multi-layered discipline, our approach to tattoo aftercare has had to undergo its own scientific shift. We have moved past the era of “repurposed” skincare and into an era of clinical precision.
The most common refrain in old-school shops was to use a simple occlusive balm or a heavy ointment. The logic was straightforward. Keep the wound moist so it doesn’t scab. While the intent was correct, the execution was fundamentally flawed because the tools being used were never meant for dermal art.
Many people reached for nappy rash creams. Look at what they were made for and you’ll see they were never intended for a tattoo. They are designed to create a thick barrier against moisture on an infant’s skin.
On a fresh tattoo, this heavy occlusion can trap heat and moisture against healing skin. The idea that “it doesn’t make a difference what you use” was a symptom of a market filled with repackaged generic skincare.
Until products were built specifically for tattooed skin, everything else was a compromise. Many of us weren’t using tattoo products at all. We were using baby products in different packaging.
To understand why a tattoo balm needs to be specialised, we have to look at the science of the procedure itself. A tattoo isn’t just a surface wound. It is a controlled trauma that deposits pigment into the dermis. Your immune system immediately identifies these pigments as foreign invaders.
Immune cells called macrophages rush to the site to “eat” the ink, but many particles are too large to clear, so they stay in place. This is part of what makes a tattoo permanent. Generic moisturisers and lotions focus on surface hydration. They aren’t designed around the oxidative stress and inflammation of freshly tattooed skin or the 14-day healing window.
Many traditional ointments are heavily petroleum-based, and some artists believe they can draw ink from the skin during the “weeping” phase. If the barrier is too heavy, it can trap heat and moisture against healing skin. Good tattoo aftercare calls for a lighter, breathable layer that helps protect against external contaminants while the skin heals.
To see where we’ve been versus where we are now, it helps to look at the functional breakdown of the products we’ve been told to trust for years. This table shows the shift from generic “grease” to the SKINGRAPHICA system.

Once a tattoo is healed, the advice usually shifts to “just use a good quality sunscreen”. That advice is a start, not the whole answer. Any UV protection is better than none, but a standard sunscreen is designed first to prevent sunburn on the epidermis.
It is not designed with tattoo pigment in mind. This is where SHIELD by SKINGRAPHICA changes the conversation. SHIELD is a daily SPF15 Fade and Blur Defence Cream for healed tattoos. For long days outdoors, use SPF50+.
Traditional sunscreens focus almost exclusively on UVA and UVB rays. These are the most damaging, but they aren’t the only factors that turn crisp black lines into fuzzy grey shadows.
Blue Light (HEV). Some research suggests that high-energy visible light, mostly from the sun and to a lesser degree from screens, reaches deeper into the skin than UVB and may contribute to oxidative stress where your ink sits. Most standard sunscreens are not designed with it in mind.
Environmental Pollutants. Microscopic pollutants in the air can cause oxidative stress on the skin. Over time, this oxidation may contribute to the gradual breakdown of pigment.
Oxidation. Just like paint on a car or a house, tattoo ink can oxidise when exposed to the elements. This contributes to the “blurring” effect, where the edges of a tattoo lose their definition.
SHIELD pairs organic broad-spectrum filters with antioxidants and barrier-supporting ingredients that help neutralise free radicals. It is a broader approach to daily tattoo protection than sunburn prevention alone. For long days outdoors, use SPF50+.
One of the main reasons people avoid putting protection on their tattoos is the “white cast”. Many mineral sunscreens leave a chalky, purple-white film on the skin. For a tattoo collector, this is a real problem. It dulls the vibrancy of the colours and makes blackwork look dusty and faded.
We understood that for a product to be effective, people actually have to want to wear it. SHIELD was designed to be transparent on application. It shows off the natural lustre of the tattoo, acting more like a “top coat” for your skin art than a thick, opaque cream.
It lets the true depth of the ink show through while helping protect against the environmental factors that contribute to blurring.
At SKINGRAPHICA, we recognise that the needs of a tattoo change as the skin repairs itself. This is why our range is stage-targeted.
Once the covering is off, the skin needs LOCK for the 14 days of healing. This recovery complex is the opposite of the old-school ointment. LOCK is Ink-Safe™, assessed for compatibility with leading professional ink systems, and it comforts and hydrates healing skin without heavy, pore-clogging waxes.
With ingredients like Centella asiatica and ceramides, it supports the skin barrier while it heals, so the work can settle as the artist intended.
The move from repackaged generic skincare to purpose-built tattoo aftercare is more than a trend. It is a commitment to the longevity of the art. When you spend thousands of dollars and dozens of hours under the needle, much of the final result depends on how you treat the skin in the years that follow.
We don’t believe in “one size fits all”. We believe in formulas that are made for the job.
