01 · The story
The world's best tattoo artists, ranked by work alone.
Every year on 1 November, SKINGRAPHICA® names the 10 finest tattoo artists working anywhere in the world and awards each of them the Black Ivy designation. It is the highest distinction in the SKINGRAPHICA® Global Artist Rankings, the list people have taken to calling the Michelin Guide of the tattoo world, and it is earned one way. By the work.
The 2026 list reflects work made and shown between 1 November 2025 and 1 November 2026, and nothing before it. That window matters. Black Ivy is not a lifetime achievement award and it is not a hall of fame. It is a moment in time. An artist who was the best in the world 3 years ago has to be the best in the world this year to keep the title, and 6 of last year's 10 did not.
Our inspectors spent more than 3 months compiling the lists, reviewing fresh and healed work, large-scale projects and the small pieces most artists never post, across every discipline from hyper-realism and colour portraiture to geometric blackwork, traditional Japanese and Korean dancheong. They consulted respected artists and industry experts along the way. The final decisions rest solely with SKINGRAPHICA®.
There is no number 1. The 10 are listed alphabetically by surname or nickname and recognised as peers at the highest level of the craft. Below them sit the GRAPHICA Top 100, the world's most exceptional masters. The NOVA Rising 20 runs on its own calendar and is announced each year on 1 February, so the rising artists it identifies can be considered for the Global Rankings published the following November. Together they are the most thorough annual account of where tattooing stands.
